Our Work
Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Hanoi office is implementing projects across Southeast Asia aimed at strengthening political education and international solidarity. We work with state and non-state partners such as universities, think tanks, research and educational institutions as well as other stakeholders. Since its inception, RLS Hanoi office has been striving for Social Justice and the assertion of social rights. We also emphasize the urgency of Social-Ecological-Transformations, as the Mekong region and maritime Southeast Asia are especially vulnerable to the escalating environmental crises. Apart from that, we work towards strengthening International Dialogue between Germany, Europe and the countries of the Indo-Pacific. In Vietnam and Laos, we also support the exchange and experience sharing on questions related to Socialism in the 21st Century. Below you will find some of the projects, we have realized with our partners over the past years.
Laos, Social Justice, Social-Ecological Transformation, Socialism
Democratic Participation in Laos
Laos’ rural and ethnic minority populations have less access to the state’ resources and communal decision-making processes. The National University of Laos is researching ways to change this by strengthening grassroots participation.
Indonesia, Social-Ecological Transformation
Climate Justice in Indonesia
Indonesia’s coal and nickel industries have devastating impacts on workers and local communities. RLS and its partner aim to strengthen social rights and environmental protection amid the country’s shift towards renewable energy.
Social Justice, Socialism, Vietnam
Grassroots Democracy and Ethnic Minorities
The Vietnamese state has made great strides in extending the democratic rights of its people. However, their implementation in ethnic minority areas is lagging behind. RLS and its partner are researching measures to strengthen grassroots democracy in these areas in order to further social and economic justice.
Cambodia, Social-Ecological Transformation
Climate Change Affecting Tonle Sap Lake
The livelihoods and biodiversity supported by Southeast Asia’s largest lake are threatened. RLS and its partner are supporting research and advocacy work aimed at understanding and mitigating the impacts on Tonle Sap Lake.
Social Justice, Vietnam
Feminist Approaches to Social Development
Despite Vietnam’s historical achievements in working towards gender equality, social development efforts often neglect feminist concepts and methods. The Institute for Social Development Studies therefore provides trainings and supports networks that emphasize these perspectives.
Social-Ecological Transformation, Vietnam
Higher Education on SET in Vietnam
The environmental crisis is effecting the everyday life in Vietnam. The country’s youth is going to play an important role in tackling this complex challenge. Yet, academic debates often neglect systemic factors. RLS and its partner C&E aim to change this by promoting the SET concept in Vietnam’s higher education.
Cambodia, Social Justice
Reporting on Social Justice Issues
Many workers in Cambodia experience unsafe and unfair labor conditions. Gender-based violence and pressures of the Covid-19 pandemic aggravate the predicament. RLS is supporting an independent Cambodian news agency in exposing these issues.
