The Values of Socialism

Socialism is understood through various approaches: as an ideal, a doctrine, and a social regime. This book brings together national and international scholars to discuss the relevance and future of socialist thought. It emphasized that values of socialism such as justice, democracy, and solidarity remain vital in addressing the complex challenges of modern societies. These values are understood not as rigid doctrines, but as evolving principles shaped by local histories, cultural traditions, and developmental needs. In the Vietnamese context, socialism is seen as a path that integrates universal human ideals with national identity, aiming to build a just and civilized society through a socialist-oriented market economy, rule of law, and participatory governance.

This book is based on the international seminar “The Values of Socialism” held in Vietnam's Vinh Long province in November 2022. This seminar was organized by the Institute of Philosophy of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS) and Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung Hanoi Office. The seminar underscored the importance of international dialogue and theoretical innovation in ensuring that socialism remains a dynamic and adaptable framework for social progress. It was also emphasized that the socialist values pursued by Vietnam are closely linked to the essence of humanity as well as the country’s traditional values. These values are grounded in Marxism-Leninism and the ideology of Ho Chi Minh, aiming to build a just, democratic, and civilized society.
