Parliamentary Elections in Cambodia
In his report, the author Manuel Palz aims to summarize the developments prior and after the General Elections in Cambodia. The surprising election result with a significant loss of votes for the ruling Cambodian People’s Party and a remarkable plus for the opposition have led to a discussion about the future of Cambodia’s multiparty democracy.
The rumours about manipulations and fraud during the election process, as well as the unfortunate performance of the National Election Committee have resulted in demands for an adjustment of the election procedure. Further, the rivalry between Prime Minister Hun Sen (CPP) and opposition leader Sam Rainsy (CNRP) paralyses the formation of a new National Assembly. Latest attempts of mediation were not successful and hence, Cambodia’s political future is still uncertain.
